The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honour one can receive in the United States. The award recognizes an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural, or other significant public or private endeavors. On June 19, world-renowned trumpeter, composer, arranger, and 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Arturo Sandoval will grace the Manitoba Theatre Centre stage as part of the 2014 TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival.

Arturo Sandoval is one of the world’s premier trumpet players. Born in 1949 in the small Cuban town of Artemsia, Sandoval is relentlessly driven by his humble beginnings. His playing style, characterized by a fiery intensity, musical sensitivity, and an unparalleled technical prowess, has captivated listeners around the globe for over forty-five years. Sandoval’s style is deeply influenced by his mentor, legendary trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. After meeting in 1977 while Dizzy was on tour in Cuba, the two trumpeters went on to work together the rest of Gillespie’s career, including in the United Nations Orchestra. While on tour with Dizzy in 1990, Sandoval defected to the United States, eventually becoming a naturalized citizen in 1999.

Sandoval has one of the most impressive resumes in music today. He has recorded and performed with a litany of musical giants, including Frank Sinatra, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz, Tito Puente, Celine Dion, and Justin Timberlake. Some of these collaborations, along with the versatile catalogue of recordings he has released under his own name, have led to ten Grammy Award wins, nineteen Grammy Award nominations, six Billboard Awards, an Emmy award, and several feature performances on the world’s biggest stages.

Through his music and his inspiring journey, Arturo Sandoval has touched souls in all corners of the world. Make sure to seize this incredible opportunity to hear, and experience, a true musical icon.
