Dave Holland: Star Power

Written by:

Throughout his distinguished career as both a bandleader and sideman, English bassist Dave Holland has emerged as one of the most identifiable voices of his generation.

He first rose to prominence in the late 60s as a result of playing with Miles Davis, appearing on seminal albums such as the jazz-fusion classic In a Silent Way. After leaving the band in 1970, he worked as both a leader and a sideman, collaborating with artists such as Chick Corea, Stan Getz and Joe Henderson. He has recorded over twenty albums as a leader, featuring a variety of configurations spanning from the intimate solo bass to the expansive big band.

Dave Holland’s music is characterized by cyclical rhythmic grooves that make his music immediately accessible for all listeners. The underlying current of these figures reveals a subtle complexity that is intellectually engaging, and Holland’s groups are known for their cohesive and dynamic ensemble performances.

His performance on June 20 at this year’s Jazz Festival features a powerhouse lineup. Saxophonist Chris Potter, African guitarist Lionel Loueke, and drummer Eric Harland are all major stars in their own right. Fans of both traditional and contemporary jazz are sure to enjoy a rare appearance by one of the most influential bassists of our time. As a group, these musicians will create an experience that Winnipeg audiences will not soon forget!
