Sundays at the Lyric
Written by: Walle LarssonFor over ten years, preparing for Smooth Sundays at the Lyric Theatre has been a big part of my spring routine. Having the privilege to bring in international world-class talent on a regular basis has been hugely inspiring for me and my band. The task of learning an entire show of new material with only one rehearsal has been both a challenge and a character-building experience for us!
This summer, we’re excited to showcase musicians from the Winnipeg area, players who possess a standard of musicianship that’s second to none. Our first three shows—July 10, 17, and 24—will feature our house band: Julian Bradford on bass, Jordan Jackiew on keys, Daniel Roy on drums, yours truly on sax. You’re likely to see a handful of special guests at these concerts, just to keep things interesting!
Brent Parkin, one of my blues guitar heroes, will be our featured guest on July 31. Working with Brent in my early twenties was a tremendous learning experience for me and an exciting foray into blues and R&B sax. Touring with Brent as a warm-up act for BB King was incredible!
On August 7, veteran jazz/R&B guitarist Greg Lowe joins us with a set of his original material. As a composer and instrumentalist, Greg is a knockout talent. Rock- and fusion-inspired chops, combined with an adventuresome spirit, help make Greg Lowe’s live performances truly memorable eventsew.
Multi-talented Rick Boughton joins us on trumpet and keyboards on August 14. Rick was instrumental in co-writing, performing and touring with me on my first CD back in 1990. It’s hard to believe now, but at that time CDs were the new format and it was a big decision whether to go vinyl or CD. (Come to think of it, we released it on cassette as well!)
On August 21, we’ll feature the stunning guitarist Carl Strempler. I’ve been trying to get Carl on gigs since I first heard him play many years ago, but his schedule has only allowed for rare performances together. I’m thrilled that Carl’s able to join us for a set of sizzling summertime tunes that will groove hard.
For aspiring saxophonists, we’ll be holding a free draw for a brand new shiny Jupiter sax. Jupiter Canada has once again donated a sax to our series so be sure to fill out an entry form at our shows.
Our free concerts have become a Sunday night tradition in Winnipeg and the joy of playing music outside has always been a highlight for our band. We can’t wait to hit the stage for another set of warm summer nights at the Lyric Theatre in Assiniboine Park. Sunday shows start at 7:00pm and are absolutely free!
Thanks to our sponsors, Red River Co-op, Johnston Group and the Richardson Foundation, for their continued support. See you at the Lyric!
